Progress
Building
During the first two weeks after the kickoff the building crew worked with the mechanical drawing crew and the systems crew and together they thought up for ideas for the robot. At last, two main ideas remained.
In order to reach the maximum effectiveness of the robot, the building crew divided the robot into three parts - driving, holding the game pieces and storing them, and, finally, throwing them. The crew thought about the parts separately.
The first part they thought of, driving, was harder then in previous years because of the low friction. The crew needed to think of ideas that gives them the best controll on the robot with the Trailer behind it.
The second part was holding the game pieces and storing them. Because the game starts with only seven game pieces on the robot, and the strategy crew assumed that on the Crater there will be many game pieces, the building crew decided to make something that pick up game pieces and keeps them until it throws them.
Lastly, the crews thought about how to throw the game pieces. Because the rules doesn't permit the robot to get out of the "Bumper Zone", we must have found a system that can throw the game pieces effectively on the opponent's Trailer.
The first idea was a robot with a tank ignition, with four wheels adjusted forewords, and when one side of wheels moves faster the robot rotates to the side of the slower wheels.
On the robot there is a long conveyor belt that can hold up to eight game pieces at once and looks like the number "7". On the top of the conveyor belt there is another small conveyor belt that when it is activated the robot shoots the game pieces.
The second idea was made as a result of those three parameters was a robot with three wheels where two of them are located forewards and activated each one independently. The third wheel is lacated backwards and can rotate in 360 degrees. together with those wheels there are another two assisting wheels that prevents the robot from turning over and getting a penalty On the robot there is a conveyor belt that collects game pieces from the floor and puts it in a stockpile. From there the game pieces are sent outside of the robot using two rotating wheels that pushes the game pieces away.
After that, the building crew presented those ideas before the team, we made a voting with the whole team and we decided that the robot will be the second idea.
At the third week the building crew knew what robot they are going to build and immediately started working on it and planning it specifically.
Now, after the crew finished the visual details of each part of the robot, the mechanical drawing crew started drawing the robot in 2-dimensions - initial sketch, so the crew can get the sizes of the robot and start working.
At the same time, the crew started building the chassis, they needed to cut the chassis with the correct sizes (by FIRST's requirements).
Suddenly the crew noticed that they should shorten the chassis by 66.5 cm because when they have cut the chassis to the maximal sizes that FIRST allowed they needed to screw some screws in the wheels, and the problem was that those screws protruded outside of the allowed zone, and therefore they needed to change it.
During the fourth week the crew started building the conveyor belt, that was made out of a static wall (that gives a counter to the game pieces).
The conveyor belt is made of strip that moves in a circular session and draws the game pieces upside.
After making it, the crew started planning the hoard of the game pieces.
At the fifth week the crew changed his general plans of the robot. The crew checked the robot and understood that the previous plan wouldn't work properly, and we need a new one. Therefore, the crew decided to make a new quick plan and, in the short time remaining, build the robot.
After finishing the planning of the new robot the crew started repairing the chassis and building the new robot - the crew started building the cannon and placed it on the robot. Then the crew have put the hoard over the cannon.
While building the new robot the crew started building another robot, and when they understood they has enough time left they decided to build the conveyor belt of the first robot and continue copying the cannon to the second robot.
After deciding they are building conveyor belt, the crew needed to disassemble the hoard of the first robot in order to place the conveyor belt. They placed it, returned the hoard to it's place, and this way they ended the fifth week with one completed robot.
At the sixth week, the crew sent the first robot to the systems crew so they make it work, and while that happens the crew keeps fixing small problems, while building the second robot.
